Welsh Financial Services Graduate Case Study: Ryan Davies

Ryan Davies

What’s he doing now? Compliance and Risk Department – Julian Hodge Bank

“After graduating from university with a degree in mathematics, I knew I wanted to go into finance but found it very difficult to find a graduate job within finance that sounded interesting.

I came across the Welsh Financial Services Programme through word of mouth; I’d heard what a fantastic opportunity it would be if I could get a place on the programme. Having just finished university, further education was not something I was looking to do but the programme offered both a two-year course with professional work experience in four of Wales’ leading financial institutions as well as an MSc in Financial Services Management.

After successfully gaining a place on the programme, I was offered a role within the Compliance and Risk department at Julian Hodge Bank in Cardiff for my first six month rotation. All the members of staff were incredibly helpful and helped me settle in with ease.

I always knew I wanted to work in the financial services industry, but could never put my finger on exactly what I wanted to do. My current role within Julian Hodge Bank, has allowed me to see all aspects of the business, which has helped me decide what career path I wanted to go down.

Every other Wednesday afternoon I attend university, where the assignments are based mainly on my workplace. It’s a great way for me to apply what I’ve learnt in university to the working environment.”

Adran Cydymffurfiad a Risg – Julian Hodge Bank

“Ar ôl graddio gyda gradd mewn mathemateg, mi roeddwn i’n sicr fy mod eisiau mynd i mewn i’r byd cyllid ond y broblem oedd ffeindio swydd o fewn cyllid oedd yn swnio’n ddiddorol.

Clywais am y ‘Welsh Financial Services Programme’ trwy wahanol bobl; roedd yn swnio fel cyfle gwerth chweil be bawn yn gallu cael lle ar y cynllun.  Gan fy mod newydd orffen Prifysgol doedd addysg bellach ddim yn rhywbeth roeddwn wedi ystyried, ond roedd y cynllun hwn yn cynnig cwrs dwy flynedd gyda phrofiad gwaith proffesiynol o fewn  4 o brif sefydliadau ariannol Cymru, yn ogystal â gradd Meistr mewn Rheolaeth Gwasanaethau Ariannol.

Mi roeddwn yn llwyddiannus yn ennill lle ar y cynllun, a chefais gynnig rôl yn yr adran cydymffurfiad a risg yn Julian Hodge Bank er mwyn cwblhau’r chwe mis cyntaf.  Roedd yr holl staff yn groesawgar iawn, ac fe helpon nhw i mi setlo yn fy rôl newydd.

Roeddwn o hyd yn gwybod mai’r sector ariannol roeddwn eisiau gweithio ynddo, ond nid oeddwn yn siŵr beth yn union o fewn y sector  roeddwn i eisiau gwneud. Mae fy rôl o fewn Julian Hodge Bank wedi galluogi i mi weld pob agwedd o’r busnes, ac o ganlyniad wedi  helpu i mi ddewis y llwybr gyrfa cywir i mi.

Pob prynhawn Dydd Mercher dwi’n mynychu’r brifysgol ble mae’r aseiniadau wedi’i selio yn bennaf ar y gweithle. Mae hyn yn ffordd wych o drosi be’ dwi wedi’i ddysgu yn y brifysgol i amgylchedd y gweithle.”
