Job Description

Are you a friendly, enthusiastic person with an appetite for learning and have a vision for your future career? Do you identify with HMRC’s values: Innovation, Integrity, Professionalism and Respect? If so, this is the role for you!

As a Customer Service Consultant, you’ll need to be a people person at heart. Vibrant and friendly and a logical thinker, you’ll have the desire and ability to help our customers meet their responsibilities for the benefit of the whole of the UK.

Everyone can bring something different to HMRC and we pride ourselves in being a fully inclusive employer. We look for talented people from any social or diverse background who thrive on treating everyone fairly and equally.

These roles are coupled with the fantastic opportunity of being an apprentice! HMRC are investing in its people and as an apprentice within HMRC, you’ll have a first-rate opportunity of working in an energetic and transformative organisation – one of the world’s leading tax authorities – while gaining an industry recognised qualification to help you forge your future career.

You’ll be the front line for customer communication – the voice of HMRC – handling contact by telephone, correspondence and webchats. Digital information management will also form a portion of your work, and while such information may be alien to you, our structured induction training is designed to build on your existing skills and is a fantastic learning opportunity. As such, a basic knowledge of up-to-date IT systems, such as Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, would help; although, this role is the perfect opportunity to develop those IT skills!

HMRC are looking for dynamic individuals who can handle difficult and enjoyable conversations in equal measure. First and foremost you will help the majority of our customers who want to get their taxes right first time; and pursue the minority of customers who want to cheat the system. Pursuing customer debt is never easy but is important as the money we bring in helps pay for vital public services. This work is both rewarding and admirable.

Our customer contact centres are open 7 days a week 8am to 10pm – your working patterns will fall within these times. Please refer to the Candidate Information Pack for more details.

We offer competitive pay, good benefits and career opportunities. So, if you’re a good communicator and are friendly, enthusiastic and flexible, you’ve just found your perfect role!
